The My Black is Exhausted. Forever in Pursuit of a Racist-free World Where Hashtags Don’t Exist book was not an intentional project. It simply began when Dr. Hotchkins asked himself to complete the following list: Name 10 places in the world where Black people are safe. Initially, he wrote “the Church,” but remembered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church massacre in 2015. He then wrote, “at home",” then recalled the murders of Botham Jean in 2018 and Breonna Taylor in 2020. He pondered further and responded “universities.” Pause. He struggled to recall an event where Black students, administrators or faculty like himself were killed on any college campus. Although his research confirms that they actively face psychological and physiological trauma daily due to racism experienced, his inability to notate the aforementioned was comforting. Eventually, these list exercises turned into journaling, which ended up becoming Greatest Fears, the first book chapter. He hesitated to write. Far too much unpacking who he was prior to COVID19, after George Floyd. Eventually, after many therapy sessions, he decided to craft what would eventually be his greatest literary contribution to date, “My Black is Exhausted,” the book.
